Uniqlo to open biggest Japanese store next spring

Published
Nov 18, 2019

As retailers with giant store estates focus more and more on mega-sized stores that can offer their full line-up plus extras, Fast Retailing’s Uniqlo has said that it will unveil its biggest Japanese store next spring.

Uniqlo

The current Uniqlo Marronnier Gate Ginza Store on the seventh floor of the Marronnier Gate Ginza 2 building will be relocated and expanded to a space covering floors one-through-four for a total selling space of around 4,450 square metres. It will also be renamed Uniqlo Tokyo as part its first renovation in eight years.

The company said that the expanded space in the crucial Ginza area is an “important and major step in Uniqlo’s global strategy” and will be targeting both the local and international shoppers who flock to the Ginza neighbourhood.

It will focus on the firm’s LifeWear products and services and will open around about the same time as another new location, Uniqlo Harajuku, in a year “when Tokyo will be the focus of the world's attention”.

And there’s no denying that Tokyo will be a top destination next year as the already-popular city will host the Olympic Games during the summer. The city’s retailers are expected to see a visitor traffic boost from this global event and also an ongoing boost from the trickle-down effect of the global attention Tokyo will receive.
