Uniqlo September sales are strong as weather cools

Published

Uniqlo’s Japan stores performed well in September with the company saying on Tuesday that like-for-like sales rose by as much as 6% last month. It’s total sales, including online turnover, were also up a healthy 5.4% during the month.

The company said the increases came as it saw a strong launch for its autumn fashion offer with the weather turning noticeably cooler from the middle of the month.

The increase came as the company also had to deal with the damage to 16 stores during the powerful Hokkaido Eastern Iburi earthquake that struck on September 6. They were closed temporarily and one was closed for a period of over one week and was therefore excluded from the directly-run store total used in the month's retail sales data calculation.

Uniqlo has been enjoying strong sales recently, despite issues earlier in the summer when the un-summer-like temperatures sent like-for-like sales down.

But the hot weather in August was a boon for the chain as its like-for-like sales rose a strong 8.8% year-on-year when online was included. But they were also up by 7.4% in physical stores only and total sales across the business rose as much as 9.1%

With the rising sales in September too, the company has shown that it’s able to make the most of weather extremes, as long as they come at the right time.
