Tamara Mellon launches inclusively-sized boots

Tamara Mellon is stepping into size-inclusive territory.

The luxury shoe designer's eponymous brand has announced that it is introducing three different calf widths to its offerings, in the form of ‘small,' ‘medium,' or ‘large.' According to Fashionista, the difference between each of the widths is approximately 2cm.

The brand is beginning with applying the new widths to its signature ‘Icon' knee-high boot, meaning shoppers can order any shoe size and calf width combination.

"When our Icon boot launched in 2017, it quickly became a bestseller," the brand explained via Instagram. "But then we started getting messages from women who said it didn't fit their calves. So, we reached out to learn more, and began designing a new Icon boot that would work for more women." The brand went on to detail that, traditionally, Italian factories like the one it uses to manufacture its footwear only increase the calf size as the shoe size increases.

"We are building a luxury brand in a different way and fundamental to that is listening to our customer and having her be a part of creating this brand," Tamara Mellon co-founder and CEO Jill Layfield told Fashionista. "That means, when she says, 'My calf doesn't fit your boots, and I really want to buy your boots,' you back up that commitment to community by listening to her and giving her what she wants."

Inclusive sizing has become increasingly mainstream within the fashion industry over recent years, following efforts by multiple designers to cater to a more diverse customer base. In April, the US brand Rodarte teamed up with the retailer Universal Standard to launch a capsule fashion series in sizes 00 through 40, while Jason Wu teamed up with plus-size brand Eloquii for the second time back in March on a 26-piece spring capsule collection. Rebecca Minkoff followed suit last month, when she teamed up with the online personal styling service Stitch Fix on a new capsule running in sizes XXS to 3X and 00 to 24 W.
