May 19, 2015
A fire that took place in Charlton, south east London, yesterday could affect deliveries for UK supermarket giant Sainsbury's.
In total, ten fire engines and 70 firefighters were called to the fire in a large warehouse on Lombard Wall, Charlton. The fire, which produced plumes of smoke which could be seen for miles around, damaged six lorries and a small part of the warehouse, the London Fire Brigade said.
One of the companies affected by the fire was grocer Sainsbury's. A spokeswoman for the company stated: "We can confirm that there was a fire at our Thameside depot on Monday afternoon. Everyone was evacuated safely and all colleagues have been accounted for. We are assessing the damage to our distribution centre, which serves a number of our London convenience stores, and will work hard to ensure that any impact on their deliveries is minimised."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
