Pitti Filati, the international trade show for the knitting yarn industry, is back at the Fortezza da Basso venue in Florence until January 25 for its 84th edition, showcasing the Spring/Summer 2020 trends and collections to industry buyers (4,350 buyers attended the last winter session, of whom 1,800 from outside Italy). The main markets covered by the event, besides Italy, are the UK, France, Germany, the USA, Switzerland, Spain, Russia, Turkey, Japan, the Netherlands, China, Belgium, Sweden, South Korea and Hong Kong.

The 20,000-square-metre show area will host the creations of 119 exhibitors: 82 in the Pitti Filati section, of which 14 from overseas (from the UK, Japan, China, Romania, Turkey, Switzerland, Mauritius and Peru); 21 in the Fashion at Work section, of which four from the UK, India and Germany; and 15 in the KnitClub section, of which three from Japan and Australia.

Spazio Ricerca, Pitti Filati’s experimental section, is focusing on two projects by fashion designer Angelo Figus. The first, “Techno-Luxury, a section where rare and hi-tech materials blend,” will showcase the trend of combining in the same material both rare fabrics, like cashmere, and polyamide and polyester yarns. It will do so via an installation-event whose protagonists are Italian warp-knit and circular-knit stretch fabric specialists like the Carvico and Jersey Lomellina groups. The second project is “CustomEasy, a knitwear capsule collection resulting from the synergy between various players at Pitti Filati”: the exhibitors’ top-quality yarns will be transformed into knitwear by the Knitclub factories and treated by Intex, a leading company in the field of dyes and treatments, creating a unique knitwear capsule collection.

On Wednesday, the Sala della Ronda is hosting a catwalk show featuring the personal collections of nine students from the Master’s Degree course in Knitwear and Creative Knitwear Design of the Accademia Costume & Moda academy in Rome and Modateca Deanna.

Also on the catwalks, the winners of the academy’s Special Projects competition launched at the start of the academic year: the Benetton group, Roberto Collina, Max Mara, Ermanno Scervino, Napapijri and The Woolmark Company each gave the students the brief of designing a capsule collection interpreting their brand’s creative identity.

On January 24 at 12.45 pm, in the Area Monumentale meeting room, Filmar and its industry partners will hold a debate on the ‘Fashion and SDGs’ project, also announcing the winner of the project’s Spring/Summer 2020 edition. The debate will focus on supply chain management and sustainable development, on workers’ rights and growth in the regions involved in the textile industry supply chain.

Finally, Pitti Filati 84 will host for the first time the Vintage Selection show, a major event for vintage apparel, accessories and design objects, in the Cavaniglia pavilion at the Fortezza Basso. The theme for this year’s edition of Vintage Selection is ‘Mind the Box’, and a special layout punctuated by illuminated frames will accompany visitors as they discover a new perspective on vintage.

According to the preliminary estimates of the Research Centre of Confindustria Moda for SMI - the Italian fashion and textile industry's employers association - the Italian yarn industry performed satisfactorily in 2018, recording a revenue in excess of €2.9 billion, up 2.7%. Bucking the trend of the last few years, exports grew again, rising by 3.6% and reaching a total value of €854 million. Imports were slightly down (-0.5%), and were worth €882 million altogether.
