Pentland's Berghaus makes team changes to boost speed and innovation

Published
Apr 16, 2019

Pentland-controlled outdoor brand Berghaus has announced a major investment in its product and innovation team in order to support its long-term growth strategy, with a focus on speed-to-market.

Pentland is making changes to allow it to get innovative Berghaus products in-store much faster

The investment includes a new ‘Sprint Team’ that will “bring certain lines to the market quicker than through the standard process.”  The team will also build on the brand’s existing Extrem range (continuing its focus on product and materials innovation) and expand its outdoor lifestyle offer, “reflecting the increasing number of consumers who are realising the benefits of, and spending more time participating in, outdoor pursuits.”

Berghaus is now recruiting for 11 new roles that will be based at the Pentland North East HQ in Sunderland, as well as three positions in its footwear division at the firm’s global HQ in London.

As part of the new approach, company veteran James Hodgson has been promoted to head of design in the new team and the company is also looking for someone to fill the other key leadership role, head of category. Hodgson has worked for the brand for 15 years and “has been responsible for the development of many award-winning innovations, including the introduction of water-resistant down to the outdoor apparel market and the launch of the world’s lightest waterproof jacket.”

Hodgson will work closely with the eventual head of category under the new set-up and the two will lead the teams responsible for delivering product and innovation developments.

Pentland also said that the new Sprint Team will allow the brand to “work more effectively with retail partners, in a way that better reflects the rapidly changing market.”

Berghaus brand director Kev McFadyen said the company is “determined to be at the forefront of where outdoor product innovation goes next and this investment demonstrates our commitment to the industry.”
