Palomo Spain shines with bohemian collection in futuristic landscape

To usher in his fifth year in the fashion industry, Alejandro Gómez Palomo, better known with the name of his label, Palomo Spain, has made a virtual come-back to Paris Fashion Week with the ‘Nuevo Día’ (new day) collection. The collection, showcased in a video produced by Shine Iberia, blends 1960s and '70s hippy style with the futuristic mirror-plate landscape of the Gemasolar thermosolar power plant.

The plant is located close to the town of Posadas, in Andalusia, where Palomo hails from. It was built in 2011 and generates thermosolar energy through more than 2,600 mirror-plate heliostats arrayed in circles under a solar power tower that looks like an ultra-bright lighthouse, its luminosity concentrated at the summit. Palomo has chosen this futuristic, almost post-apocalyptic setting, hundreds of miles away from Paris, as the backdrop for the presentation of his latest collection.

According to Palomo Spain, “this impressive installation brings us to the heart of things, urging us to embrace the fresh new spirit adopted by the label this season,” embodied in a collection built around the concepts of “freedom, comfort and beauty.” In this futuristic venue, never before featured in a fashion show, Palomo Spain introduced a collection inspired by the 1960s and 70s pacifist movement and its associated hippy style. Palomo Spain’s new aesthetic aims to “provide a strong response to the current crisis and to prompt a profound yearning for renewal.”

The collection’s tailored garments, Palomo Spain’s hallmark, are made with cotton and organic fabrics by producer Julián López, and are distinctive for their fitted silhouettes and gilets with generous lace collars, matched with flared trousers and tight-fitting shorts with codpiece-like appendages. The garments’ versatility is evident in the flowing dresses and palazzo trousers, or the sheer shirts and tops delicately trimmed with ribbons.

Woollen fabrics by Rubí feature predominantly alongside cotton and other materials like tulle and organza. The collection also includes several denim outfits and assorted knitwear, whose patterns are inspired by the colourful Jarapa rugs. As usual with Palomo Spain, glass pearls, feathers and Swarovski crystals are used extensively for additional detailing in jackets and trousers.

Once again, and it could not be otherwise, hats play a part in the collection, through a collaboration with producer Pardo Hats, featuring bucket hats and 1960s-style newsboy caps. They are not the only fashion accessories on show, since the collection also includes jewellery by Mateu-lo and a new eyewear capsule collection developed by Palomo Spain with Mó de Multiópticas.
