Nike launches a guide to circular design

Nike is opting for an open-source solution for its guide on circular design, the world’s leading sportswear manufacturer announced at the Copenhagen Fashion Summit this week.

Nike presents its circular design guide

Nike’s chief design director John Hoke, accompanied by Samuel Ross from Britain’s A-Cold-Wall, commented: “This is an invitation. We are sharing what she have learnt through working on design. Creatives from groups the world over can access it. Design plays a major role. For us, it’s an invitation into dialogue.”

The American sportswear titan, which has collaborated with A-Cold-Wall on sustainable garments over the past few years, worked with the designer and students from Central Saint Martins on the creation of the document based around 10 principles of product conception and product life. Not only does the guide draw on Nike case studies, but also includes examples from other brands such as Patagonia.

“For us, making the guide available is only the beginning,” John Hoke explained. “The document has to live. The idea is to generate feedback from it on what works and what doesn’t.”

The advice within, if not revolutionary, is extremely practical: ranging from the choice of low-impact materials to the reduction of falls in production; as well as considerations of recycling, from design to optimisation of packaging use. Available for online download, the guide, supported by relevant examples, offers data of interest to the sector for the purpose of progressing collectively towards the goal of more responsible product design.
