Natural hair has a red carpet moment at Cannes 2017

The Cannes Film Festival was a makeover marathon for the makeup artists and hair stylists working tirelessly on the French Riviera to ensure models and actresses stepped out onto the red carpet looking their best. Although typically a high-glam affair, this year's Cannes Film Festival channel a more natural style vibe both in beauty looks and hair styles, despite an inevitable handful of exceptions. Here's a look at some of the hottest hair trends from the Cannes festival fortnight.

The sleek ponytails and perfectly woven braids that were popular at Cannes last year were largely shunned by the celebrities treading the Riviera red carpet this year. Straight and structured styles made way for much more natural looks. Even the bun -- a style staple still present at the festival -- took on a relaxed vibe, creating "undone" effects with just-thrown-together looks and strands left free as if forgotten (Winnie Harlow, Nicole Kidman, Kendall Jenner, Sara Sampaio). There were a few exceptions, however, with actresses including Deepika Padukone, Fan Bingbing and Hana Sugisaki, opting for chic, glamorous styles with smooth and sophisticated buns.

Another hot trend on the Cannes red carpet was slicked-back locks, with hair worn loose and scraped back from the face with a wet-look finish. This pure glam look brings hair away from the face neatly, fully showing off fresh, glowing skin in all its glory. Eva Longoria, Marion Cotillard, Marine Vacth, Doutzen Kroes, Adriana Lima and Pamela Anderson rocked this look, which has plenty of character.

Natural looks were the biggest hair trend at Cannes this year, with loose waves and tousled beach hair or bed head styles, either with or without a center parting. Most attendees followed this trend, which is packed with personality and contrasts with the princesses-style ball gowns seen on the red carpet. Bella Hadid, Laetitia Casta, Charlize Theron, Diane Kruger, Monica Bellucci, Lily-Rose Depp, Thylane Blondeau and Barbara Palvin all stepped out with natural hair styles in Cannes.
