Muji opens largest store outside of Asia in Toronto

Japanese retailer Muji is re-opening its original Toronto location on Friday, November 23, inaugurating its first flagship store in Eastern Canada and the largest Muji store outside of Asia.

The store, which originally opened in November 2014 as the company's first location in Canada, has received a major facelift tripling in size and now housing several new services.

While the previous store occupied 5,658 square feet of retail space, the new flagship store will reach 19,110 square feet spread over two floors.

The expanded store will offer new services such as a coffee counter and the Aroma Bar, which allows customers to create a customized fragrance blend by choosing from more than 40 essential oils.

It will equally offer in-store customization services including, for the first time outside of Japan, the Digital Fabric Printing Service where customers can print a photo directly from their phone on to select Muji apparel and home fabric items, and the Laser Engraving Service, which will allow customers to have letters engraved onto a selection of Muji products.

The locations will house Muji Canada’s full range of merchandise including more than 4,000 items such as household goods, apparel and food.

"During these four years since we expanded to Canada, we opened seven additional stores and gradually increased our range of products and services," said Toru Akita, president of Muji Canada, in a news statement.

"By allowing us to reach out to more people and to further convey our philosophy, the Atrium flagship store will open a new chapter for Muji in Canada.”

As part of the flagship store's opening, the retailer will launch a pop-up exhibition dubbed "What is Muji?” from November 19 to December 23, at the former location of Muji Atrium where some of the brand's most iconic products will be on display.

Since expanding to Canada in 2014, Muji has opened eight Canadian locations, with five stores located in the Greater Toronto Area and three stores in BC, including its first Canadian flagship in Vancouver.

The retailer has previously stated that it plans to open up to 20 stores across Canada, though no official expansion plans have been shared.
