MoMu Gallery to open Margiela at Hermes exhibit

Published
Nov 10, 2016

The Mode Museum (also known as the MoMu gallery) in Antwerp, will be hosting an exhibit dedicated to designer Martin Margiela's work as the creative director of Hermes. Margiela spent six years at the helm of the luxury leather brand, starting in 1997.

The Paris-based luxury house appointed Margiela as the artistic director in October of 1997. This was an unusual choice for the brand, considering Margiela’s deconstructivist style of designing was very different than Hermes’ luxurious brand image.

Nonetheless, Margiela designed 12 financially and critically successful collections for the house. This exhibit will highlight some of Margiela’s best work from his six years at Hermes.

Margiela is known as one of the greatest designers of the last 50 years. TO this date the designer has never given an interview, and only one photo of him exists. Even though Margiela has not designed a collection publicly since 2008, he is still frequently cited as a huge influence by contemporary designers.

Margiela’s namesake company, Maison Margiela, is still operational and run by Creative Director John Galliano. The exhibition will explore the connections between Margiela's work at Hermes and his work at his own label.

The exhibit will run from March 31st, 2017 to August 27th, 2017.
