Menswear label Smalto appoints Jean-Luc Amsler as creative director

French menswear label Smalto has a new creative director. In three years, the Parisian tailoring brand has changed no less than three designers. It recently dismissed Franck Boclet, who took charge exactly a year ago, replacing Eric Bergère, who in turn was hired in June 2016. Smalto's new creative director is Jean-Luc Amsler, a designer who made a name for himself with graphic, colourful womenswear collections with contemporary cuts.

In a press release, the label wrote that "[Amsler] joined in September 2018, and is taking over as creative director for the Smalto group, which is chaired by Agnès Sarah Espinasse." Amsler will design a first capsule collection for the Autumn/Winter 2019-20, which will be shown in Paris on Jan.18, 2019.

"Smalto has already created some prototypes for the next collection in its studios, in order to offer a range of exclusive models to its haute couture customers," said Smalto, which is looking to "return to the brand's DNA, adding a breath of fresh air and a futuristic touch," said a spokesperson to FashionNetwork.com.

Jean-Luc Amsler was born in Switzerland. After completing his education, he moved to Antwerp and then to Paris, where he started his career in fashion in the 1980s. He worked for major labels like Yves Saint Laurent, André Courrèges, Jean-Louis Scherrer, Dior, Arnys and Thierry Mugler, before starting out on his own in 1992. He built up his brand around fragrances, and showed for a time at the Paris Haute Couture week. The new appointment marks his full return to the fashion scene.
