Two months after the departure of Josep Font, Delpozo is believed to have found a successor. German designer Lutz Huelle has become the Spanish prêt-à-couture brand’s new creative director, according to reports.

His appointment to become creative director of the fashion brand founded by the late Jesus del Pozo in 1974 was announced by WWD. The Spanish firm declined a request for comment from FashionNetwork.com on Tuesday. The German designer’s eponymous brand also preferred not to comment.

Josep Font was named creative director of Delpozo in 2012 in a strategic decision that was part of a relaunch strategy led by the company following its acquisition by Perfumes y Diseño. Font spent six years at the company, continuing the legacy of Jesus del Pozo with sculptural designs and voluminous silhouettes. At the same time, the designer oversaw the brand’s international expansion through a series of key openings. It is now available in 34 markets with 80 stores, including flagship boutiques in Madrid, London and Dubai. After 10 seasons showing at New York Fashion Week, Delpozo returned to Europe with a fashion show at London Fashion Week in February.

Meanwhile Lutz Huelle arrived in Paris in 1995 to work as head of knitwear at Martin Margiela after graduating from the prestigious Central Saint Martins. It wasn’t until 2000 that the German designer launched his own brand, called Lutz, with partner David Ballu. In 2012 the label was rebranded as Lutz Huelle amid an international expansion. The brand has won two ANDAM fashion awards and has a showroom in the Parisian Le Marais neighbourhood. It showcases its collections at Paris Fashion Week.

Largely unknown in the Spanish fashion scene, Lutz Huelle joined the second edition of 080 Barcelona Fashion back in 2008. At the helm of his eponymous brand for over 18 years, he has become known for his deconstructed pieces and mix-and-match approach. His use of volume will come face-to-face with Josep Font’s delicate silhouettes, and only time will tell what his appointment will mean for the evolution of the brand.

If the rumours are true and he joins Delpozo as creative director, the Spanish fashion house will have to face a creative and structural overhaul similar to that experienced by its rival Loewe following the appointment of Irish designer Jonathan Anderson in 2013.
