Loewe postpones Craft Prize until 2021

Craftsmanship is not immune to the flurry of event cancellations and postponements that has resulted from the health crisis caused by the new coronavirus. The Loewe Foundation and Paris' Musée des Arts Décoratifs have announced their decision to postpone the award ceremony for the fourth edition of the Craft Prize, which will now be held in spring 2021.

The Spanish fashion brand had planned to announce the winner of the Craft Prize's 2020 edition on 19 May, at an exhibition hosted by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, in central Paris. The competition's fourth edition had received a total of 2,920 applications, up 15% from the previous year. From among these applicants, a panel of 10 experts had already selected 30 artists from 18 different countries.

"The Loewe Foundation’s commitment to craft remains as strong as ever and we’ll continue to support craft during this difficult period through projects including Loewe en Casa – a series of online events and workshops from leading figures in the world of art and craft, hosted on Loewe’s Instagram," said the LVMH-owned luxury brand in a statement published on the Craft Prize website.

Launched in 2016 by Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson, the annual Craft Prize was conceived with the aim of celebrating excellence and innovation in modern craftsmanship and recognising artists who promise to "set new standards for the future of craft." The project pays homage to Loewe's own origins as a collective of Spanish leather craftsmen in 1846.
