K-beauty firm Amorepacific to join global RE100 initiative

Published

Amorepacific has joined the global RE100 initiative becoming the first Korean beauty company to aim to source 100 percent renewable energy to power all of its production sites and offices by the year 2030.

Launched by the international non-profit organization, The Climate Group, in partnership with CDP, in 2014, RE100 is a global collaborative initiative among companies committed to using 100 percent renewable energy. The Seoul-based cosmetics giant joins companies such as Google, Microsoft, Apple, and over 290 others.

To achieve the 100 percent renewable energy goal, Amorepacific will utilize advanced technologies to manufacture products at lower temperatures, and will also develop more low-carbon footprint products using ingredients and packaging materials with lower GHG emissions. Moreover, Amorepacific will use third-party PPAs and green contracts operated by the Korean government.

"Amorepacific agrees that resolving the climate issue is an essential agenda not only for corporate sustainability but for the survival of humanity,” said Suh Kyung-bae, chairman and CEO of Amorepacific Group.

“By achieving the RE100 goal by 2030, we hope to contribute to international climate action. As a global corporate citizen, we will cooperate to reduce our carbon footprint.”

Amorepacific commitment to sustainability can be traced back to 1993 when it set its first sustainable management goals. The company started voluntarily tracking its GHG emissions inventory in 2008 and has made continuous investments to begin its transition to renewable energy sources.

In fact, in 2020, Amorepacific sourced five percent of its electricity from renewable sources, including solar power and geothermal heat, with plans to add renewable energy generation facilities on the rooftop of its production plants and idle surfaces.

Currently its global HQ building is also rated first-level in G-SEED (Green Standard for Energy and Environmental Design) and energy efficiency. It is also certified as the gold grade in LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). It achieves 37.6 percent less energy consumption than its estimated energy demand using eco-friendly systems.

“By committing to 100 percent renewable electricity by 2030, Amore Pacific is taking an important step toward improving its sustainability, joining a growing number of companies committed to driving market change. This sends a powerful message that renewable electricity makes good business sense, and we encourage others to follow,” said Aleksandra Klassen, RE100 senior impact manager, The Climate Group.
