Published
Jan 25, 2019

1x1 Studio, Aurélie Fontan, Bowen Hu and Shie Lyu have been announced as the four winners of Fashion Scout’s Ones to Watch Award for the Autumn Winter 2019 season.

Aurélie Fontan

The four emerging brands will present their AW19 collections in a group catwalk show in the Vestibule Catwalk Hall during London Fashion Week in February.

The award has been previously won by the likes of Phoebe English, Eudon Choi and Georgia Harding, with many of the previous winners going on to become reputable labels in the international fashion industry.

1x1 Studio, Aurélie Fontan, Bowen Hu and Shie Lyu were selected by a judging panel composed of industry experts including Martyn Roberts,Fashion Scout founder and director;

Constanza Lombardi, Next Gen buyer at Browns; Kendal Robbins, senior programme manager at British Council; Lizzy Bowring, catwalk director at WGSN; and Scarlett Conlon, deputy fashion editor at The Guardian.

THE WINNERS

Aurélie Fontan is a London-based eponymous brand focusing on eco-friendly luxury womenswear that is produced from the latest technology and unconventional techniques. Born in Paris, Fontan graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art and obtained six nominations at Graduate Fashion Week. Her AW19 collection demonstrates how circular economy and innovation can be combined in luxury RTW, featuring a bio-designed dress from bacteria and fully recycled leather outfits.

Shie Lyu is also an eponymous label. Created by Chinese designer Lyu, it is known for its intricate use of unusual industrial materials as embroidery and beading details. This industrial, meticulous approach has been featured on Vogue Runway, CR Fashion Book and Vision, and the label was a 2019 finalist for the H&M Design Award as well as CFDA+ 2018. The AW19 collection sees Lyu use her mathematical way of thinking, and draw inspiration from Moholy Nagy’s light display installations to create a modern and romantic couture collection.

Shie Lyu

1x1 Studio is a luxury menswear brand created by London College of Fashion graduate Yi-Ling Kuo, who won the FDC Young Designer Award and staged her first presentation in New York in 2017. The brand uses recycled materials, specialist yarns and crafted knitting techniques in hope to raise awareness of undiscovered territories. The AW19 collection is a study in 80s architecture, art, film and lifestyle, and a reminder of society’s reliance on technology.

Finally, Bowen Hu is a New York-based unisex designer with an innovative approach to textile, colour and silhouette. Her designs are handmade and tend to psychologically or physically support the wearer and environment, giving fashion another dimension by adding a background story and music sound to every style. Her AW19 collection takes inspiration from the world of one’s subconscious mind and brainwave patterns.
