Dolce & Gabbana is taking Tomo Koizumi to Milan in February

Once again Dolce & Gabbana shows its commitment to young designers. After helping British punk-queer designer Matty Bovan last September, it is the turn of Japanese designer Tomo Koizumi to be invited to Milan.

"The choice of bright colors, a careful study of volumes, theatricality of forms, couture details, attention to body positivity and an unconventional idea of feminine seduction - all recurring themes in Tomo Koizumi's artistic production - have fascinated Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana since the young designer's first creations," the house said in a statement.

Koizumi, whose real name is Tomotoka Koizumi, is known for his vibrant colors and sculptural silhouettes. A fashion enthusiast since he discovered John Galliano's Christian Dior summer 2004 couture collection at age 14, he trained as a costume designer, dressing artists and celebrities -among them Lady Gaga in 2016- and launched his brand in Tokyo in 2011, after a buyer ordered a model he had created as a student.

His voluminous creations with a couture touch in polyester organza, ruffle sculptures and gathers in strong colors, seduced journalist and stylist Katie Grand, who helped him organize his first show in New York in 2019 in Marc Jacobs' boutique. The acclaimed show got his foot in the door, and the following year he was selected as a finalist for the LVMH Prize. Since then, he has multiplied his collaborations, producing a capsule collection for Pucci and participating with a creation in the Alber Elbaz tribute show in Paris last September.

"Tomo is a volcano of ideas, energy and vitality, and his fashion is proof of that: the organza clouds, the bright colors, the elegance and lightness of the shapes of his clothes clearly express the deep creative process behind it. We are happy to be able to be at Tomo's side on this very special occasion and to bring his art to Milan for the first time," say Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.

The duo will allow Tomo Koizumi to walk the runway in Milan during the upcoming Women's Fashion Week in February taking charge of the 360-degree event, from the realization of his fall/winter 2023/24 collection to the organization of the show, which is expected to be housed in a yet-to-be-defined Dolce & Gabbana space.

"This fashion show will be my first abroad since the pandemic - I really appreciate being able to celebrate this important moment with the great Dolce & Gabbana family," said the Japanese designer, specifying that he has admired since he was a child the Milanese label's creations, which continue to inspire him.
