Charles Jourdan relaunches with Christelle Kocher as artistic director

Iconic luxury footwear brand Charles Jourdan is making another comeback. Women’s Wear Daily reported that the French shoemaker, acquired in 2008 by Groupe Royer, will return in the fall of 2022 under the leadership of a new artistic director, Christelle Kocher.

To revive the brand, Jourdan chose the artistic director of the trendy ready-to-wear label, Koché, and Lemarié, the French house owned by Chanel that specializes in the art of feather work and the crafting of fabric flowers. This decision came with the need to seduce a younger generation of sophisticated customers.

"It's wonderful to wake up a sleeping beauty with an incredible history, heritage, and lineage, and to bring it back in a modern, contemporary and creative way," explained Kocher. To offer a glimpse of her work, the designer created a capsule collection to be unveiled this March 1 during the Koché runway show. The first shoe models from the Fall/Winter 2022 collection should be available in June.

Charles Jourdan’s Instagram account announced the brand’s rebirth with Kocher three days ago, revealing a new logo imbued with a 70s look that merges the C and J letters as one.

The 101-year-old shoemaker's previous attempt to relaunch was in July 2017 with the opening of a 130-square-meter flagship store in the heart of Place de la Madeleine in Paris. The boutique has since closed, and the brand had been dormant for two years.

The footwear specialist under a Groupe Royer license had also attempted to relaunch in 2010, but had put a stop to the project in 2013, selling its production site located in Romans-sur-Isère the following year.
