Camden Market to partially reopen on Monday

Published
May 29, 2020

Camden Market owner LabTech said that the market will partially reopen at the earliest possible opportunity, on June 1, following the government’s latest announcement on the easing of the lockdown.

Camden Market will start to reopen as soon as June 1

It’s planning to implement a phased approach and accepts that tenants will remain under pressure so is extending the rent-free period for all traders that it introduced three months ago.

The open air nature of the market means it can get a head start with permission to open from Monday as far as its food and beverage tenants are concerned. But most retail traders won’t be able to operate until June 15.

And it remains open to question how much traffic it will see. Camden is a key tourist destination and is unlikely to see any international tourists for now. It’s also likely that domestic UK tourist traffic will be muted, especially as Britons are still being discouraged from using public transport.

LabTech said that measures being implemented from June 15 include a strict ‘one-way’ system enforced across the market site; installation of floor markers for social distancing; queuing spots outside shops and directional wayfinding arrows; public hand sanitiser stations; and maps outlining the correct flow of traffic available at those hand-sanitiser stations and strategic crossroads around the Market.

It will also expect traders to limit the number of customers entering their stores at any one time, maintaining a strict cleaning regime, and accepting card payments only, where possible.

While timings are to be confirmed, LabTech’s Buck Street Market is likely to follow the phased re-opening approach in the coming weeks.

Camden Market will also introduce a ‘Socially Distanced Summer ’ campaign with a series of free events for the public to participate in.
