Armani planning Tadao Ando exhibition for Silos

Published

Giorgio Armani will stage a Tadao Ando exhibition inside the Italian designer’s contemporary show space Armani/Silos next month. And he has named it The Challenge.

Armani has timed the opening of the retrospective to open on April 9, the opening day of this year’s Salone del Mobile, the giant furniture fair in Milan.

The Tadao Ando exposition marks the first time Armani/Silos has stage an exhibition dedicated to architecture.

Armani is highly familiar with Ando’s work, especially seeing as the great Japanese architect designed the Italian designer’s main headquarters and Teatro Armani catwalk space on the opposite side of the street to Silos on Via Bergognone, in south Milan.

The Challenge is designed to showcase the career of Ando through his most significant works, via a narrative journey, designed by Ando and his studio in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou.

The Challenge is based on an Ando exhibition that was previously staged in the French contemporary art museum, in a show that lasted from October 2018 until February 25, 2019. However, Ando’s Silos show will also include multiple plans and models of Teatro Armani.

The retrospective includes over 50 projects, illustrated with sketches, original blueprints, video installations, technical drawings, travel notes and photographs taken by Ando himself. It will run from 9th April to 28th July 2019.

"I wish to create an architecture that will live on eternally – not in substance or form, but as a memory within people’s hearts," said Ando, like Armani a self-taught creator, noted for his creative ability to combine  water and raw sculpted concrete.
