Adidas by Stella McCartney kicks-off Grammy weekend festivities with A-List, young Hollywood crowd bash

Published
Feb 6, 2023

Lights, camera…roller-skate?! That seemed to be the missive of the party hosted by Stella McCartney in Los Angeles on Thursday to kick off the 65th annual Grammy awards in LA on Sunday. The raison d'etre was more about releasing the spring/summer 2023 collection and hanging with her SoCal musician and celebrity friends than convincing the crowd to don skates and enjoy the trending retro leisure activity. In any case, the evening was an inclusive-focused romp filled with fashion, fun and festive tunes.

Held at the Henson Recording Studios, boldface names in attendance included Kate Hudson and actress Madelyn Cline, who accompanied Stella on the red carpet, each commandeering the designers' men's jacket as a feminine style statement; her father, Paul McCartney, and fellow Beatle Ringo Starr; Demi Lovato looking very Pat Benatar and equally enthusiastic about the idea of portraying her via a music film; Anya Taylor-Joy who showed up late; James Marsden who was bro-ing it up until late; Orlando Bloom sans Katy Perry; Dave Grohl; Paris Jackson; Leslie Mann; Cara Delevingne; Karlie Kloss; Shailene Woodley; Nicole Richie; Alicia Keys; and party sisters Tallulah and Scout Willis, and more.

McCartney and team enlisted the LA Roller Girls, a troupe of multi-gendered pro skaters, who presented the collection with dance grooves and trick skills on the pop-up rink by Pop Sk8 Live, as a few brave guests took to the rink to test their skating skills. Entering the venue, Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth admitted to growing up skating to Beatles songs.

McCartney said she wouldn't rule out an Adidas by Stella McCartney roller skate and said she also skated while growing up in England. DJ-slash-emcee Zuri Marley cleared the dance floor for a performance by Beth Ditto, in which she copped to doing some karaoke before ending with her original music. Live performances by Minke, Koffee, and Muna followed. After some roller skating, the rink was converted into a dance floor. Sisters Scout and Tallulah Willis removed their skates and held the dance floor in shimmering crystal and tinselled outfits.

Despite the 11 p.m. cut-off, the event heated up and served guests until 12:30 a.m. Those remaining shuffled into Stella's VIP section, where the senior McCartney held court on the top of a banquette along with Kate Hudson, Baz Luhrmann, Leslie Mann, Derek Blasberg, and Brandi Carlile with whom the designer's father was eagerly engaged in conversation. McCartney, 80, jumped down when he heard Earth Wind and Fire's September to dance with a guest. He graciously spoke to guests such as Beck Hansen and others fanning.

Beck was urged by Orville Peck to join his crew at his place for an after-party. At the same time, rumors circulated that Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl, Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz, and other musicians in attendance might take the stage for an impromptu jam.

The members of Måneskin popped in after attending Spotify's Best New Artist event dressed in all-white Zegna ensembles for a change from their typical colorful Gucci looks. Comedic actress Mann artfully poured the Casa Dragones tequila into another guest's mouth, proclaiming she didn't spill a drop. Liv Tyler, looking gorgeous as ever, found her Christian Louboutin pumps as treacherous as skates and admitted she was happy to kneel on the banquet as the area swelled with the late revelers. Girl Scout cookies wowed as a passed dessert treat.

While not a typical show, the collection presented earlier by the skaters via several outfit changes was marked by tie-dye coveralls, neon layering separates, and graffiti-mark graphics on the sports-centric separates collection. The gender-neutral Sportswear Run shoe made from renewable and natural materials is a retail push for the season. The 'TrueNature' collection, aimed as gear for environmental activists and portrays the Earth from satellite and map lines, was fashioned into giant floating orbs over the skating-rink-slash-dancefloor instead of a disco ball.

Those who wanted to mingle and nosh in the crisp LA night air enjoyed food and drink in the courtyard. As the final guests were exiting, the food truck vendors, such as Delicious Pizza, emptied the rest of the offerings and handed out food to guests in need of a late munchie.
