New York's garment district is threatened by relocation

Published

New York’s Economic Development Corporation is attempting to relocate garment district manufacturers from Midtown Manhattan to Sunset Park, Brooklyn, a move that may very well threaten the future of fashion manufacturing in the States.

With the removal of zoning laws that have protected the industry for decades, manufacturers will face the choice of having to move to a 200,000-square-foot industrial space (currently under renovation) with lower rent and a longer lease. While factories will receive some financial assistance for relocation costs, the concern is that the new location presents itself with unfavorable transportation options, is a fraction of the size of the current garment district and is in an untested territory—three of many obstacles for workers of all levels and roles.

It was reported that as of recent, approximately 13 factories so far have made the decision not to move to the Sunset Park facility as it’s too risky. Because of this, industry experts fear New York may see a drop in the number of local companies, as well as American craftsmanship in general.

If the plan is approved by local community boards, it will then be brought before the City Council for a final vote with changes potentially occurring within a couple of months.
