In 2016, the Loewe Foundation founded the Loewe Craft Prize, an annual international competition whose goal is to showcase and celebrate excellence, innovation and artistic merit in modern designer craft.

The competition seeks to bring recognition to craftsmanship that is in sync with the current cultural moment, and support creators whose talent, artistic vision and innovation establish new paths for the future of artisan craft.

For this edition, in addition to including this year’s winner, the jury member’s includes three important new names: the president of the World Crafts Council Rosy Greenless, the ex-director of the National Museum of Korea Hongnam Kim, and the furniture and product designer Toshiyuki Kita.

According to the Loewe Foundation, the goal of the Loewe Craft Prize is to recognize the work of extraordinary artisans who combine an artistic vision with innovation.

The prize’s goal is to give recognition and support to the creators age 18 or over from anywhere in the world who demonstrate an exception ability to create objects with an outstanding aesthetic value. Through works that reinterpret and update traditional artisan techniques while also reflecting the unique vision of the creator, the Loewe Foundation hopes to show that craft can contribute to the broader cultural dialog.

In creating the initiative, Loewe’s creative director Jonathan Anderson was inspired by the origins of the brand, which began as an artisan collective in 1846. “Craftmanship is an essential value for Loewe. As a fashion house, we’re dedicated to craft in every sense of the word. In it resides our modernity; it will always be relevant,” the director stated.

The German artist Ernst Gamperl has been named the winner of the 2017 edition out of 26 finalists chosen from 4,000 applicants, who hailed from more than 75 countries across five continents.

The prize’s endowment includes 50,000 euros for the winning project. The winning project selected by the jury, in addition to the finalists chosen by the Expert Committee, will go on to form part of the exhibition for the Loewe Craft Prize 2018, which will take place in London next April.

The registration period opened on June 19 and will close on October 17. The finalists will be announced in January 2018 and the winner in May 2018.
