Henkel gains firmer foothold in North America

German consumer goods group Henkel has inaugurated new headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut, for its North American business, which notably includes beauty and skincare. The new buildings, extending over nearly 15,000 m2, will host 500 employees by 2018. In order to better respond to the requirements of North American consumers, an R&D centre and a customer experience centre focused on beauty products will also feature in the new headquarters.

Hans van Bylen, CEO of Henkel - Reuters

The USA is Henkel's first market in revenue terms, a standing which is also due to the acquisitions policy adopted by the German group in the region for many years: cosmetics company Dial was acquired in 2003, followed by professional haircare brands Sexy Hair, Kenra and Alterna in 2014, respectively for €2.4 billion and €270 million.

In 2016, Henkel's sales rose by 3.5% to €18.71 billion, with the beauty division, including Schwarzkopf, Syoss, Fa and Diadermine, generating €3.83 billion. North America accounts for 22% of Henkel's global sales, followed by emerging markets with a combined 42% and Western Europe with 32%. It is worth pointing out that, on the North American market and in 2016, 45% of  beauty sales came from products launched less than three years ago.
