Fashion designers pay tribute to Prince in Minneapolis

Published
Sep 25, 2016

American and international designers came together for Fashionopolis, a one-time sold out event celebrating the life and style of Prince.

“Prince's impact extended far beyond music. He was a true original when it came to all forms of self expression, and an inspiration to the fashion industry worldwide," says Allison Kaplan, the Senior Editor of Shopping & Style of Mpls.St.Paul Magazine which is the region's leading lifestyle publication and producer of the event.

Kaplan continued. "We wanted to honor his memory by looking forward—these designers took their cues from some of Prince's most iconic fashion moments, and used that as a catalyst to create new and modern designs. We think Prince would have loved it."

Designers included Project Runway alum Christopher Straub, social media influencer and founder of Boy Meets Girl, Stacy Igel, and two women from the Netherlands who moved to Minneapolis in the 90s with the goal of designing for Prince and actually did.

The runway show took place on September 22nd and was produced by Grant Whittaker.

The exclusive looks will now travel to Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) from Sept. 27- Oct. 16. Events surrounding the exhibition at Mia include a panel discussion on Prince's design legacy that will take place on September 29th.

One of the panelists slated to participate is a current curator of the museum who worked for Prince as a stylist and photographer.

The looks that will head to the Mia exhibition range from 80s fashion to more modern and minimalist style.
